LINCOLN — Scott Middle School paused to celebrate outstanding student achievement at the end-of-year awards ceremony, culminating in the presentation of the school’s highest honor: the Hazel G. Scott Award.
Established in 1996 by the Scott family, the annual award commemorates the remarkable 41-year legacy of Miss Hazel G. Scott within Lincoln Public Schools. Miss Scott, who began her career at College View High School in 1924 and later served as the very first principal of Southeast High School, set a benchmark for educational excellence that still inspires the district today.
Each year, the honor is bestowed upon two students who best exemplify the hard work, dedication, and character Miss Scott expected of her students. To qualify, nominees must meet rigorous "pillars of excellence," including maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, demonstrating active leadership across school activities, and maintaining a consistently positive attitude toward the entire student body.
This year’s recipients, Leah Salmen and Hayden Pester, were called to the stage amid enthusiastic applause from peers and faculty alike.
Leah Salmen: A "Light" to the Campus
Described by her teachers as a "light to everyone who encounters her," Leah Salmen was named the first of this year's recipients. Faculty praised Salmen’s exceptional ability to balance a demanding academic workload while remaining deeply embedded in the Scott Middle School community.
Salmen's leadership and talents span a wide variety of campus organizations. She is an active leader in the Hope Squad, a musician in the Jazz Band and Clarinet Choir, and a performer in the school musical. Additionally, she competes on the volleyball court and lends her support to the Unified Club.
"She is the definition of a well-rounded student who handles it all with grace and outstanding character," school officials noted during the ceremony, highlighting her seamless management of both school commitments and outside activities.
Hayden Pester: Leadership Defined by Kindness
The morning’s second honor went to Hayden Pester, a student recognized for his maturity, dependability, and big heart.
As a "Scott Scout," Pester has become the face of hospitality for the school, welcoming new families and students with thorough tours and a patient, warm demeanor. His natural leadership bridges the gap between peers and adults effortlessly.
Beyond his guiding duties and involvement in the Strategic Game Club, Pester plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in the school's Publications Class. As a photographer and yearbook staff member, he is responsible for capturing the spirit of the school year and documenting the history of the Scott community.
A Proud Legacy Continued
The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation for both recipients, marking another chapter in the school's long-standing tradition of excellence.
"We are proud of these students and their valuable contributions to Scott Middle School," the administration shared in a statement following the event. Both Salmen and Pester stand as shining examples of the enduring legacy of Miss Hazel G. Scott.
