Please use the tabs below to view information for the 2025–2026 school year

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year!

We are excited to begin another successful year here at Scott Middle School! The values embedded in our school mission statement—Scholarship, Commitment, Opportunity, Teamwork, and Tradition—guide our staff in providing a safe, inclusive, quality learning environment for all our students daily. We are looking forward to welcoming our new and returning families to Scott at our Open House events on the following dates:

The 6th-8th grade  Scott Open House will be held on Monday, August 11th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

The first day of school for 6th grade students is Tuesday, August 12th, with all grades attending school on Wednesday, August 13th.

As principal of Scott Middle School, I am thrilled to continue leading this vibrant community. July 2025 marks the start of  my second year at Scott Middle School, and I am now entering my 19th year in administration. I am also an Army veteran, and a proud mother of four daughters, aged 25 to 13, with one of them now in middle school. I am married to my supportive husband, Kye, and together, we cherish the joys and challenges of parenting.

Having had three children graduate high school already and one making her way, I understand the importance of school relationships in student success. I also recognize that each child is an individual, and supporting them in their strengths and goals is vital. I have one child in the armed forces, one in community college, and one in a four-year college. I am committed to fostering a supportive learning environment at Scott where each student feels safe, confident, and successful. I encourage and promote collaboration among families, staff, and the school to achieve this goal.

Over the past year, I have greatly enjoyed meeting families at various school events, connecting with our dedicated staff during meetings, and immersing myself in the daily life of the school. These experiences have deepened my excitement and commitment to serving our Scott Middle School community.

Throughout the year, please make use of our Scott Middle School website under the district web page at www.lps.org for announcements and other important news from Scott. It’s a great way to stay connected and informed. Be sure to follow us on Twitter at @scottmidschool or our Facebook page for additional information.

At Scott, our unwavering priority is student learning. To help ensure that our students are preparing for success, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) serve as the structure for providing instruction and supporting student needs as they develop. We are dedicated to helping students meet their full potential in the classroom and as lifelong learners.

To stay updated on how students are doing in their classes, please sign up and familiarize yourself with Synergy ParentVue. ParentVue is our student information system, and it provides students and parents access to up-to-date attendance and grades for each class. Students and parents will use the same login information they received last year. Access to ParentVUE can be found on the Scott Middle School website. Please contact our registrar, Kelly Phillips, in the main office if you need your login information.

We encourage our students to be leaders and to become involved with music, intramural sports, clubs, and activities at school, as we know learning occurs in all of these settings. Information regarding activities is in this newsletter and on our website. We also believe that partnering with parents/guardians is an essential ingredient in the recipe for student success, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to share insights or ask questions as your child goes through their middle school years. Thank you for sending such wonderful children to Scott Middle School from your home. We are excited to spend our days partnering with you and helping them grow and learn as students!

Have an excellent start to the school year!

Warm regards,

Jesse Tvrdy
Principal

It is your responsibility to contact the school office at 402-436-1218 if your child will be absent from school at any time. This includes late arrivals and early dismissals. An answering machine is available when the office is closed.

Please keep the office informed of address, phone number, or email changes. It is important for us to have up to date information to be able to contact you regarding your child.

Please know that students are expected to keep their cell phones in their lockers between the hours of 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. If a message cannot wait until after school, please call the main office.

In order to avoid classroom interruptions, parent deliveries and phone messages for students will be held in the main office. Students will be notified to pick up messages and/or items up during lunch or breaks.

Homework requests can be made through the office on the morning of the third day of an absence due to illness. Call the school before 9:00 am as teachers use their plan times to gather assignments. These assignments can be picked up in the office between 3:15- 4:00 pm that day. Parents and students are encouraged to check ParentVue or StudentVue for schoolwork they may have missed while absent. Students should check Google Classroom for content and missing assignments.

All visitors need to enter through Door #1, which is the main front door on the South side of the building by the flagpole. All other doors will be locked during the school day. Visitors will check in with our Secured Entrance Monitor and get a badge before entering the building. Parking is available for guests on the South side in the Visitor Parking area.

  • Please allow extra time and be patient during these first few weeks and the Pine Lake Road construction.
  • Curbside drop off and pick up is safest for students.
  • Vehicles may not park or stop for drop off/pick up within 75 feet of crosswalks.
  • Students need this space to see if cars are coming before they enter the crosswalk.
  • Students who walk or ride a bike to school should always cross in designated crosswalks and obey all traffic signals.
  • Wear a helmet for safety if riding a bike and bring a padlock to secure it while at school. Rollerblades and skateboards are NOT allowed on school grounds.

StarTran does allow Lincoln Public Schools to sell bus passes at a reduced rate for students who qualify for Free or Reduced meals. In order to receive the reduced rate, we must receive permission to use the application for Free or reduced Meals information in order to confirm student eligibility for a reduced price bus pass.

This form must be completed and kept on file at your location for all students purchasing a reduced rate pass each school year. You may not purchase a reduced rate pass until you have this form on file, even if the student has received a reduced rate pass previously. This form can be found on the LPS Form Center.

The Scott Middle School Counseling Program provides a comprehensive, developmental program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development. Our counselors are professional school advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. In partnership with other Scott Middle School educators, parents, and the Scott community, our school counselors work to ensure that all students are prepared with the knowledge and skills to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society.

At Scott, our school counselors design and deliver a school counseling program that improves student outcomes. They lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. Our counselors at Scott uphold the ethical and professional standards of ASCA and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess.

Serving the Population

Scott is the largest middle school within Lincoln Public Schools serving over 1,000 students. Each school counselor has a caseload between 320-360 students. At Scott, school counselors connect with students through a variety of methods but most common are classroom presentations, small instructional groups, and individual appointments.

Looping

We loop with our students. This means that school counselors remain with the same caseload all three years while at middle school. Looping provides the opportunity for relationships to be made with individual students and families.

Connecting

To connect with your child’s grade level school counselor, you can email or call the school. If your child would like to schedule an appointment to meet with their school counselor they can access their grade level counselor’s Google Classroom and complete the form.

Did you know that Scott Middle School has a SCIP Team? SCIP stands for School Community Intervention and Prevention. SCIP is a program designed to bring together families, schools, and the community to support student behavior and emotional health. SCIP was developed by community representatives and concerned educators and was designed to assist students experiencing difficulty in the learning environment. Behaviors of concern may be depression, grief, self-harm, alcohol and/or drugs, bullying, violence, eating disorders, gambling, and/or video gaming addictions.

SCIP supports students by using a four-step process. Peers, parents, school staff, or community members observe a student exhibiting behaviors that interfere with learning (IDENTIFY). The SCIP team may involve the parents or students to express concerns about behaviors, seek solutions, and explore options that will increase the student’s opportunity to be successful in school (INVOLVE). When appropriate, the SCIP Team may offer a school counselor, faculty member, or a school program that can provide assistance. SCIP collaborates with community behavioral health agencies that can provide screenings at no cost to the student (ASSIST). Finally, the SCIP Team will continue to support the students in the school environment. The goal is to aid the student’s improvement (SUPPORT).

If you would like more information about the SCIP team at our school, please contact Amber Cownie, Team Leader at acownie2@lps.org, or Jesse Tvrdy, Principal at jtrvdy@lps.org

Our mission is to support students and staff through direct classroom needs, scholarships, incentives, charitable giving, building maintenance, after-school activities, guest speakers, educational field trips, and school-wide on-premises events. We do so through a series of fundraisers, corporate and private donations, and a network of parent volunteers. We are a 501c3 organization that works in conjunction with LPS and the LPS Foundation. If you’re interested in donating, volunteering, becoming a board member, or just have questions, contact us today!

Start the Day with School Breakfast

All schools across the district offer breakfast. Students have the choice of selecting a cold breakfast (ex: cereal) or a hot breakfast (ex: mini pancakes). In addition to the hot or cold breakfast entrée, a student will receive 100% fruit juice, low-fat milk, and an optional ½ serving of fruit.

Breakfast at Scott Middle School is $1.50 and is served from 7:30-7:53 am

Lunches

School lunch consists of two or more hot entrees, salad, or meatless entrees plus a salad, vegetable, fruit, and milk.

The lunch price is $2.70 per meal and the reduced price is .40 per meal. Students may purchase extra milk for .60 cents.

Food Allergies Requiring a Special Diet

You will need to complete the Medical Statement for Students with Special Nutritional Needs form. This form must be signed by a physician and turned in to the school Health Office for processing. Please plan on sending a meal with your child for three days after submitting the form. This allows staff time to order the foods necessary for your student’s diet.

Finger Scanning

Scott has a biometric finger scanning identification system in an effort to provide accurate student identification as well as faster meal service at breakfast and lunch.  This system eliminates the need for students to have to memorize and enter a six-digit number or carry a card to scan.

How does finger scanning identification work?

Each student’s finger will be scanned using a finger scanner. The software uses the scan to identify unique points on the finger and creates and stores individual templates that identify each student in a database.  Each time the student purchases a meal and scans his/her finger, the software will search for a match in its database to identify a student.

What about our students’ privacy?

We are not fingerprinting students. The software does not store a copy of fingerprints.  Instead, it creates a template of unique points on the finger.  The template is converted to a unique identification number and is stored in the school’s database with the same high level of security as all of our records.  The templates are also protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).   FERPA is the Federal Law that protects all student records.  At no time are fingerprint images stored.  No fingerprint can be recreated or delivered to any agency governmental or otherwise. This new way of identifying our students is safe, easy, accurate, efficient, and secure.

Beginning with Open House on August 11th,  we will be scanning the fingers of all 6th grade students and students new to LPS/Scott. Students that have been previously enrolled at Scott will not need to have their finger scanned this year. This will also continue into the first week of school as needed.  If you decide that you would not like your student to participate in the finger scan please notify the school office.  Additional information regarding biometric finger scanning can be found on the Nutrition Services website at lps.org

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Andrew Ashelford, Director of Nutrition Services, at aashelf@lps.org or 402-436-1742.

Starting July 14th parents and guardians will verify their child(ren)’s enrollment information through the online parent portal, ParentVUE. This annual process was formerly completed on a paper census form, which parents/guardians had to review, update and return to the office. You must have an LPS ParentVUE account to complete this process. (Activation is a one-time setup).

To create your ParentVUE account, please contact your school office for an activation key.

Your ParentVUE account will be used for the duration of the time you have a student in LPS. Note that you will need a valid email address to create your ParentVUE Account. If you do not have one, you may obtain a free email account through services such as Google.

If you already use ParentVUE, there is nothing more you need to do to prepare. You will be ready to complete the annual Online Registration Verification process when it opens on July 14th. If you have previously activated your ParentVUE account, but can’t remember your password, you can reset it online at https://synergyvue.lps.org/

The Scott Middle School Student Handbook is available to review

It can also be found by visiting scott.lps.org and clicking on the “Handbook” link located in the right-hand column beneath the “Essentials” heading.

Scott Middle School will be charging $6.00 for any student issued LPS lock that needs to be replaced. The lock fee will be added to your students account and available in ParentVue.

PARENTS MAY NOT BRING OUTSIDE FOOD IN FOR ANY STUDENT OTHER THAN YOUR OWN CHILD. This is in violation of federal lunch guidelines. While parents are welcome to bring lunch to their children, we do not allow outside food vendors to make deliveries for children at school. Office staff will not accept such deliveries.  The office will not be accepting food deliveries for students the last week of school.

Clothing must be appropriate for school settings in order to provide a safe and orderly environment for all students to learn. The responsibility for the dress and grooming of a student rests primarily with the student and his or her parents or guardians, although, the school administration maintains the right to determine the appropriateness or suitability of any student attire.

Allowable Dress and Grooming

  • Students must wear clothing including both a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent and shoes.
  • Shirts and dresses must have fabric in the front, back, and on the sides. Fabric covering all private parts must not be see through.
  • Clothing must cover undergarments and all private parts. – All tops must have straps – All tops must meet the top of the pants. Wearing pants below the waistline is not allowed.
  • Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, wood shop, and other activities where unique hazards exist.
  • Head wear is allowable as long as it follows other areas of the dress code and the student is easily identifiable.
  • Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

Non-Allowable Dress and Grooming

  • Clothing may not depict, advertise or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances.
  • Students may wear hoodies, but must keep the hood off their heads. Considerations will be made for students who wear special clothing as required by religious beliefs, disability, or convey a particular message protected by law.
  • Dressing, grooming, or engaging in speech that is lewd or indecent, vulgar, or plainly offensive.
  • Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected groups.
  • Clothing, including gang identifiers, must not threaten the health or safety of any other student or staff (examples include bandanas, gang signs).
  • If the student’s attire or grooming threatens the health or safety of any other person, then discipline for dress or grooming violations should be consistent with discipline policies for similar violations.
  • Clothing with words, pictures, or phrases that depicts violence or intimidation may not be worn (examples include images of guns, knives and any other items generally considered to be a weapon).

Students who are in violation of the school dress code will:

  1. Be educated on the reason this clothing is not allowed in a school setting, and when possible be given the opportunity to remove the item(s).
  2. Be given the opportunity to change into school issued clothing in order to find items that are appropriate to wear.
  3. When the first two are not viable options, the student’s parent will be contacted to bring appropriate clothing for the student to change into.
  4. Repeated violations could result in school consequences.
  5. Students will not be allowed to return to classes until they are in compliance with the school dress code.

NOTE: Schools may communicate additional information on dress code expectations to students and parents/guardians.

Lincoln Public Schools uses a uniform system for calculating grades in all subject areas in all grades in middle and high school.

80% of the student’s grade will be based on summative assessments and assignments (i.e.tests, exams, major projects and long-term assignments that assess and evaluate student learning).

20% of the student’s grade will be based on formative work (i.e. homework that monitors ongoing learning).

Rationale:

  • This will create a consistent grading template in all secondary grades and courses.
  • This will maintain the emphasis on the importance of summative tests and work
while also emphasizing the value of quality, practice, and homework in the learning process.

The grading scale is as follows:

  • A = 90–100
  • B = 80–89
  • C = 70–79
  • D = 60–69
  • F = 0–59

If the student’s account is zero or negative, the student may not charge a second meal, an extra entrée or any a la carte items.

Families are encouraged to regularly check their account balance and track their child’s spending to prevent negative meal balances. It is the responsibility of the student’s family to provide the funds for the child’s meal. Negative balances are expected to be paid in full each school year.  When negative balances reach $10 or more families will receive notification of charges via a Negative Balance letter or automated phone call.  Automated phone calls will continue until the negative balance has been paid.  Unpaid meal charges are carried over at the end of the school year. The negative balance will remain in the school meal software until it is three years past due. After three years the negative meal balance will be moved to the student’s account in the student information system (Synergy).  It is important to keep contact information (address, email and phone number) current with LPS.

Scott Middle School offers a full year of after-school intramural, co-curricular athletics- soccer, volleyball, cross country, girls’ and boys’ basketball, and track. Games and practice information is read on the daily announcements and is for 7th and 8th-grade students only.  A permission slip must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to Mr. Henninger before a student may participate. Permission forms can be found on the Activities tab under Scott Athletics as well as paper copies in the main office.

All students are expected to follow these guidelines for participation.

GOOD Sportsmanship is expected of all Scott Middle School Athletes and students.

  • As a student athlete, the school work comes before athletics. Students involved in intramurals are expected to maintain their academic work and take care of their classroom responsibilities first
  • All athletes are expected to abide by LPSDO student rules as outlined in The Responsibilities of Students Code.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct at practices, games, toward teammates, referees, coaches or other teams may result in removal from practices, competitions, loss of participation for the season or loss of eligibility for the remainder of the year.
  • Students should come to practice to learn skills and have fun.
  • Students should notify their coach if they cannot attend a practice
  • Students should report to practice by 3:05 p.m. and be dressed for practice by 3:10 p.m.
  • Students should have a pass from a teacher if they are going to be late for practice.
  • Student who are suspended out of school may not participate in intramurals or other activities white they are on suspension.  Students on out-of-school suspension on Friday may not participate in Saturday activities.
  • Students on in-school suspension can participate in intramural activities after they have returned to classes.
  • Scott intramural jerseys will be used during competitions.  Lost jerseys will be replaced by the student at cost.
  • Intramural athletic activities are held at various middle schools and high schools in Lincoln.

Traditionally, one of the rituals families participate in as they prepare for the new school year is to purchase school supplies. In accordance with the Nebraska Constitution and state and federal law, Lincoln Public Schools provides free, public education to all students. This generally means the district provides the supplies needed for instruction at no cost to students. This includes textbooks, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue, scissors, paper, notebooks, tissues, etc. For this reason, you do not need to send school supplies for your child’s individual use at school but are welcome to if you would like. You are NOT required to purchase any of these items, but you may wish to purchase and donate some items to your child’s classroom. We ask that you do not put your child’s name on any items. All items purchased will be graciously accepted as a donation to the school and will be shared by all students within the classroom.

The mission of Scott Middle School is to promote student achievement though community building, equitable instruction, and consistent supports for all students.
